Knitware
Getting to know Knitware
Lesson 1
We will start out with a discussion of how to get started, tools needed and how to decide which program is best for you.
Getting Started with a Demo
You need a computer with at least Windows XP Service Pack 2; Windows Vista and Mac users have also been successfully installing Knitware programs in Compatibility or Emulation Modes.
Since the demonstration versions do not allow patterns to be saved you will need to have a printer attached. There are a few things that are not available in the demonstration mode. However, we will go through a few lessons using Demonstration programs only.
You can download any of the programs free at www.greatknitdesigns.com. CD Demo Disks are also available for a nominal fee and shipping at the same web address. The program is also available at many fine retailing locations. Installing and using at least one Demo before you make a purchase is encouraged.
Ideas
Your first pattern attempts should be small and simple. Knitware does NOT make you an expert. You will make mistakes and there will be failures. The same as when you try to knit any other pattern. As these lessons continue we will work together creating a series of patterns. Once familiar with the program you can work to bring your ideas to life! Do you know what styles are flattering for your body shape? Its time to find out and start knitting garments that look great and fit you!
Yarn
All types and kinds of yarn are fantastic for use with Knitware Programs. Use your own handspun or purchase yarn at the craft store. You are in charge! Use the Handy yarn calculator to estimate your yarn needs too!
Hook, Needles or Knitting Machine
Very few patterning software systems are compatible with so many yarn craft methods. Remember, you can mix techniques to create unique items showcasing your special talents. Knitware is ready for your style!
Measuring Tools
A measuring tape is a must. A knitting gauge is a boon but swatches can be measured with a tape or ruler.
